Puget Sound Energy (PSE) has announced a $5,000 gift to Des Moines to help fund the city's 50th birthday events next year, becoming the first corporate sponsor of this year-long celebration.
Des Moines, with origins as a logging and fishing community more than a century ago, incorporated as a city on June 17, 1959.
Mayor Bob Sheckler thanked PSE for its grant, expressing "gratitude to Puget Sound Energy not only as a long-time business anchor in Washington but also as a good neighbor in the communities it serves.
"Even at a time of economic upheaval, Puget Sound Energy has recognized the significance of our city's anniversary and is contributing to the success of this celebration."
PSE's sponsorship, according to Patrice Thorell, parks and recreation director, will fund the four major 50th birthday activities sanctioned by the city:
March 21 - the 50th birthday gala, a formal dinner with entertainment in the new Student Union Building at Highline Community College.
June 17 - the 50th birthday party, which will celebrate the actual day of incorporation at the Odd Fellows Hall with speeches by dignitaries, historic displays and a big birthday cake.
July 4 - Fireworks Over Des Moines, featuring an expanded fireworks show preceded by an evening of food and entertainment for all ages.
July 18 - "Waterland City" Festival, featuring a parade, classic car show, kid's fun zone, entertainment stages, sidewalk cafes and an evening sock hop downtown. At the Des Moines Marina will be a classic boat show, sail boat races, a strong man competition and farmers market.
"Puget Sound Energy is proud to support community programs that bring neighbors closer together," said David Namura, local government and community relations manager for PSE.
"We congratulate the City of Des Moines on achieving 50 years of enriching the community and providing outstanding leadership."
