The Port of Seattle is now offering prime location parking spaces with plug-ins for electric vehicles at the main garage of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
The pilot program includes six spaces located on the fifth floor of the garage that will provide free electric charging.
"As part of our continued push for energy efficiencies at Sea-Tac, we will be one of the very few airports in the country to offer electric charging at our parking garage," said Mark Reis, airport managing director. "This will be an encouragement for the public to try electric vehicles in their travels and get their batteries charged while they are away."
Sea-Tac receives 97 percent of its electricity from hydroelectric sources and in addition purchases 25 percent of its energy needs renewable energy sources such as wind power, according to Port staffers.
The new electric vehicle plug-ins consist of standard 120 volt outlets with 20 amps and the spaces are even designated with green striping. The spaces will be first come, first served and standard parking rates will apply.
The electrical charging will be free of charge.
Port officials joined with members of the Seattle Electric Vehicle Association and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency for a demonstration of Sea-Tac's electric plug-ins on Dec. 5 on the fifth floor of the Sea-Tac main terminal parking garage.
Several members of the Seattle Electric Vehicle Association have volunteered to be the first users of the service as grass roots promoters of electric vehicles since 1967.
