Thirteen science, technology, engineering and math students at Highline Community College in Des Moines have received up to $5,265 each from the college's Science Scholars Program.
The scholarships, provided with funding from the National Science Foundation, help cover education costs for an academic year.
The scholarship winners are Jesse Hamm, Burien; Mark Flynn, Des Moines; Ravi Bansai, Normandy Park; Natnael Gezahegne, SeaTac; Damien DeCremer, Vasili Ialanji and Tri Le, Federal Way; LeeAnna Miller, Seattle and Mong-Tuyen Tran and Steve Raniero, Tacoma.
The scholarships are available to students who are eligible for financial aid, taking at least 12 credits and have a 2.5 GPA or better.
Students must be pursuing careers in astronomy, biology, biotechnology, botany, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental science, geology, marine science, mathematics, oceanography and physics.
In September 2007, the National Science Foundation awarded Highline almost $600,000 to provide scholarships to students majoring in the pure and applied sciences.
