BACK ON THE HARDWOOD: Ballard High School graduate Kim Stewart, class of 74, is led onto the Ballard gym floor by a tandem of cheerleaders during his Jan. 16 jersey retirement and induction into the Ballard High School hall of fame for basketball.
The Ballard High School gym was packed to the rafters with students and community members Jan. 16 to honor Ballard graduate and basketball standout Kim Stewart, who had his jersey retired to the Ballard High School hall of fame.
Stewart, class of 1974, averaged 25.3 points per game during his senior season, setting a Metro league record.
That season he became the only player from the west coast to be selected for the McDonald's All-American Game.
Stewart was a three-year starter at the University of Washington and helped the school earn its first NCAA Tournament berth in 23 seasons.
As a Husky senior, he led the team in both scoring and rebounding.
He went on to teach and coach all over the Seattle area, including at his alma matter, Ballard High School.
Stewart is the second inductee into the Ballard High School hall of fame, after Michael Johnson, class of 1997.
The celebration preceded the Ballard boys basketball team's game against Roosevelt, and the team honored Stewart in their own way, with a 58-51 victory over the Rough Riders.
