Nine times Foster’s Refugio Soto-Lopez launched three-point shots that barely even made a swishing sound Friday, dropping straight down through the net.
The baskets accounted for all of Soto-Lopez’s 27 points in an eventual 75-63 Seamount League win over Highline, and came from beyond the three-point arc seemingly from anywhere he wanted.
“Just practice, practice, practice,” said Soto-Lopez of how he learned to shoot like that. “Usually I make four or five. But I was feeling good before the game.”
“He can shoot it,” said Bulldogs head coach John Barbee. “Especially when he gets his first one. That’s what happened. When he’s on he’s one of the better shooters around.”
His efforts helped Foster to keep the Highline Pirates at bay.
Highline was led by the 29 points of Thang Nguyen, who also showed skill from three-point land with seven.
“Highline did a good job of sticking with us,” said Barbee, whose team from Tukwila is in its first Class 3A season after opting up from the 2A Nisqually League.
Foster quickly built a 15-5 lead on the strength of a nine-point string that included one Soto-Lopez three-point bomb and a steal and a slam dunk by Travis Miller. Yasin Abdullahi started it with a two-point shot and ended it with two free throws. Norman Moimoi made the other two points.
“We came out on fire,” Barbee said.
Soto-Lopez had plenty of backup. Moimoi was next in scoring with 12 points and Miller hit 11. Darius Page scored nine, Cameron Faison eight, Abdullahi five and Daniel Tang three.
“We’ve got a really good team,” said Soto-Lopez.
Behind Nguyen on the Pirates’ team were Eric Turner with 12 points, Roger Pierce with 11 and Jarett Godina with six.
