Boys basketball
Federal Way 71, Decatur 63
The rivalry lives.
Even though Federal Way and Decatur are in separate divisions and do not play each other during the regular South Puget Sound League season anymore, they did get invited to play in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day tournament last Monday, Jan. 19.
They may still collide in the postseason, too. If they both finish in the same place in the divisions they will meet in the SPSL Tournament, and the West Central District and state tournaments also hold a chance for playing each other.
Michael Hale III led the Eagles to victory with 20 points, with Cole Dickerson scoring 17, Andre Barrington 13 and Jaffrey Forbes 10.
Jerron Smith of Decatur led all scorers with 22 points with Jordan McCloud tossing in 20 and Marcus Tibbs 12.
Kentwood 52, Federal Way 50
Federal Way came up just shy of Kentwood in a Saturday, Jan. 17 game.
Decatur 64, Rogers 51
Tibbs tallied 21 points for the Gators as they resumed SPSL South action last Tuesday, Jan. 20. Smith scored 19 and McCloud 15.
Quilcene 67, CFC 41
Kenny Brown buried 14 points for the Eagles in a losing cause last Tuesday, Jan. 20. Ryan Lorenz scored nine and Jordan Wesolek eight.
Curtis 82, Beamer 79
Vlad Aficiuc swished in 32 points for Todd Beamer in the Tuesday, Jan. 20 loss. Kevin Davis hit 25, Chase Hildebrandt 12 and Napa Mefi 10.
Decatur 95, Em. Ridge 54
Smith scored 20 points to lead the Gators last Tuesday, with McCloud and Tibbs backing him up with 19 apiece. Cam Schilling hit 10, Anthony Williams nine and Jordan Rawls eight.
Girls basketball
Kentwood 76, Federal Way 64
Brittany Barrington scored 15 points for the Eagles in a Saturday, Jan. 17 loss. Tyshana Burgess tallied 13 as Jacqie Evenson and Darah Huertes-Vining both scored 12.
TJ at K-M
No referees showed up for the Saturday, Jan. 17 game so the Raiders went back to Thomas Jefferson and watched the boys game.
Beamer 64, Curtis 34
Mercedes Sullivan scored 21 points to lead the Titans to victory last Tuesday. Shyla Akins added 14 and Meghan Graf eight.
Em. Ridge 69, Decatur 53
Sarah Quartz tallied 23 points for the Gators in their Tuesday, Jan. 20 win and Yonnie Coleman hit 12.
TJ 39, Kentlake 30
Hannah Kiyohara knocked in 19 points for the Raiders in last Tuesday’s road win.
Gymnastics
Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson took second in a four-team meet last Wednesday, scoring 155 points to the 163.8 of Auburn-Mountainview. Bonney Lake came in third with 134 and the North Thurston School District team took fourth with 139.95.
Bri Adam took second in the all-around for the Raiders with 32.8 total points. She also tied for third in the floor with an 8.9 and tied for third in the vault with an 8.7.
TJ teammate Anna Wallace was third in the bars with a 7.55 and Brandi Vallejo tied with Adam for third in the vault with an 8.7.
Federal Way
Federal Way also competed in a four-team meet Wednesday and took third. The Eagles scored 138.0 points behind the 152.8 score of North Kitsap and the 147.95 of Kent-Meridian. Rogers was fourth with 132.1 points.
Lydia Berger of the Eagles came in third in the vault with an 8.5.
Decatur
Decatur finished third out of four teams in its meet as well.
Kentlake won the meet with a score of 170.25 and Tahoma took second with 161.65 ahead of the Gators’ 138.45. Auburn finished fourth with 137.95 points.
Holly Phan of Decatur tied for third place in the vault with a score of 8.6.
Boys swimming
Puyallup 94, Beamer 90
Todd Beamer opened by winning the 200-yard medley in a time of 1:51.49, before Costner McKenzie took the 200 individual medley in 2:26.02 and Dylan Chase won the 50 freestyle in 25.35. Tommy Fraychineaud scored 204.25 points to win diving and Shane Clare took the 100 butterfly in 57.64.
Beamer captured first in the 200 free relay in 1:42.96 and Clare took the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.82.
