Combined gymnastic teams perform well

West Seattle and Chief Sealth high schools represented West Seattle Feb. 6 night in the Metro League Championships, placing in the medals three times and sending two gymnasts on to the District competition held at Sammamish High School on Valentine's Day.
West Seattle and Sealth, along with Center School, combined to form one team representing all three schools under the coaching of Echo Balliett-Legge and Cheryl Lee.
While each school was scored separately the gymnasts supported and encouraged each other within the team as if there was no inter-competition. Following a similar mind- set, West Seattle Captain Lisa Broadstone said "I thought our team did very well in the meet today..." The show of camaraderie and team effort in the representation of the West Seattle area was exhilarating- two schools that are for all intents and purposes set rivals came together to represent the community they share.
West Seattle Captain Lisa Broadstone backed by her team did very well, in the league championship meet. Within the meet itself Lisa was able to capture sixth place on the balance beam with a score of 7.45. She was also able to secure for herself positions in the district meet for the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor routine.. Sam Westler, Captain for Chief Sealth High School, also did admirably in the League Meet.
For the league championship Sam received medals in two categories. The first was for fifth in the All-Around with a score of 29.925, and third on the Floor Routine with a score of 8.075. On the District level Sam got a position in the All-Around portion of the meet. Sam did very well and will have some tough competition when she gets there; Holy Names only gymnast, Katie Rock, received first place in every category and will be the leading contender for the All-Around Champion at the district meet on the 14th.
Even though the Wildcats-Seahawks-Dragons team by no means swept the board, they were content with the outcome of the meet and happy with their success. Sophomore Lauren Jeglum said, "As (coach) Echo told us, 'Today is the day, not a day for us to be superstars.' And we were all superstars tonight!" The enthusiasm and energy shown by this hybrid team shows nothing but promise for the gymnastics in the West Seattle Community's future.
