Police Blotter Week of 2.23.09: Hush, little baby
Mon, 02/23/2009
Someone called Child Protective Services after noticing that a woman had a habit of coming into a local bar while leaving her 8-month-old in the car. In fact, she recently brought the child inside, placed it behind the bar, and partied on, ignoring the baby.
In the 7700 block of 15th, an employee on break at the liquor store saw a lingering customer who pretended to be looking at displays while chatting on a cell phone and shoving a bottle of liquor under his coat. The suspect also managed to steal the wallet of customer who was standing in line at the cash register. When the employee yelled that the suspect should pay for the items, the suspect had the audacity to yell back at the employee, chastising him for rudeness, saying something to the effect of “Can't you see I'm on the phone?!” The suspect escaped out the door, but the store's surveillance video should prove helpful in identifying him.
A home in the 1700 block of N.W. 56th has a history of folks breaking in to live on the bottom floor. Officers responded to the building after hearing reports of a woman screaming. When no one exited the residence officers sent a canine unit inside. Four people were found. The woman had not been hurt, and she and one of the men signed a trespass form, acknowledging that if they returned to the building she would be arrested. Two other men were arrested. Both were wanted on felony escape warrants from the Department of Corrections. One was booked for that violation; the other was booked into King County Jail for additional warrants, including a misdemeanor warrant, violation of a no contact order and for false reporting. (He had given officers a fake name when discovered.)
Thursday afternoon, in the 5500 block of 15th N.W., a group of men were standing around talking. One man tried to defend his uncle when an argument broke out and ended up receiving a severe laceration on his hand when another in the group pulled out a box-cutter and started swinging. The victim's wound needed 13 stitches. There is no further information on the suspect, who remains at large.
In the 7700 block of 9th N.W., someone stole a bicycle from an open garage in the middle of the afternoon.
Friday evening, a woman drank a fifth of whiskey, smoked some marijuana, and ended up staggering into traffic at NW Russell and Lone. Several citizens called 911 to report the incident, and a bystander tried to get her out of harm's way. She ended up being transported to Harborview for treatment.
An elderly Ballard woman was surprised when she went to the bank regarding some certificates of deposit that were coming due: She discovered that her account had been drained of $74,000 by someone who had transferred funds from the CDs to her checking and saving accounts and had then withdrawn the dollars. It turns out that an extra address – in New Jersey – had also been added to her account. The victim doesn't know anyone in New Jersey. The fraud, forgery and exploitation squad has been notified of the case.
