At a Feb. 17 meeting of the East Ballard Community Association, some potential projects were discussed for possible funding from the upcoming Neighborhood Improvement Fund.
Applications are due Feb. 27 and approved projects would be implemented in 2010.
Here are some projects being discussed among community members:
- 14th Avenue Northwest and Northwest 60th
There are concerns of poor visibility for crossing and that the intersection is dangerous for pedestrians and vehicles crossing due to large vehicles parked in the median too close to the intersection. Vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists cross 14th Avenue Northwest to get to the light on 15th Avenue Northwest. This intersection will become a major walking route to Ballard Corners Park on 17th and 62nd when it opens, since this will be the closest park families living east of 15th and south of Northwest 65th.
- 8th Avenue Northwest, south of Market
Many say physical improvements are needed for two medians south of Market Street, tree replacement and easier to maintain plantings. There is also a concern that the medians are currently not being maintained, because it is too dangerous. This needs to be remedied by either planting maintenance free plant material or changing the layout of the medians to make it safer to maintain.
- Sidewalk repairs needed in East Ballard
- 8th Avenue Northwest and Northwest 49th
There are no crosswalks across 8th Avenue Northwest between Market and Leary. This is particularly a concern for bus riders, who have to cross 8th at Northwest 49th every day to get to her the bus stop.
- Sidewalks between 6th and 8th avenues northwest on Northwest 47th
- 9th Avenue Northwest and Northwest 61st Street
Some see this is a dangerous unmarked intersection that could be addressed by a traffic circle or signs. I
- Others said they wanted to see better signage to businesses and community places in Ballard
- Crosswalk improvements at 7th Avenue Northwest and Northwest 65th
This crosswalk is on a busy arterial, however, with a growing business district on the north side of NW 65th, business owners have noted many near misses at this crosswalk.
