After discussing several proposed neighborhood projects at the council's latest meeting on March 18, members decided to investigate the proposed changes further before submitting their list of top priorities to the Seattle Department of Transportation and Seattle Parks and Recreation for analysis and feedback.
Teresa Christianson, who lives in Westwood, attended the meeting to explain her neighborhood's strong desire for a traffic circle at the intersection of Southwest Henderson Street and 31st Avenue Southwest. Christianson explained that Henderson has become a major pedestrian corridor for families since construction was completed on Westwood Village and the Southwest Library.
Speeding cars on the street have caused two major accidents since Christianson started her proposal and prior to that a vehicle crashed into the home on the northeast corner of the intersection.
Jack Pedigo, a member of the Delridge District Council, also discussed the need for a crosswalk on 35th Avenue Southwest and Southwest Dawson Street to improve safe transportation to Camp Long. Pedigo said that speeding traffic headed south bound on 35th Avenue can be difficult to see due to the nearby hill crest. He added that the Seattle Department of Transportation may require a traffic light be installed if a crosswalk is placed there.
An alley passage way between Delridge Way and 25th Avenue Southwest was also discussed. A complaint was filed that the alley had become a dumping ground for trash and often floods to overflow polluted waters into the Longfellow Creek Watershed.
Other proposed neighborhood projects include:
Traffic calming devices on Southwest Yancy Street at 28th Avenue Southwest and 30th Avenue Southwest.
Traffic calming devices on 26th Avenue Southwest between Southwest Genessee Street and Southwest Andover Street.
Traffic calming devices such as "kids at play" signage and sidewalks near a playground at 31st Avenue Southwest and Southwest Raymond Street.
Senior crossing signs at all four corners surrounding the new Commons Park at HIgh Point.
A crosswalk at Southwest Roxbury Street and 10th Avenue Southwest.
Traffic calming devices on Southwest Brandon Street between 26th Avenue Southwest and 30th Avenue Southwest.
Traffic calming devices on 26th Avenue Southwest between Southwest Alaska Street and Southwest Edmunds Street.
The Delridge District Council will vote on which projects should be the highest priority by March 31 and submit their decision to the to the Seattle Department of Transportation and Seattle Parks and Recreation.
