News From the Chinook: Wildcats year-round sports round-up

Fall sports
Football: The most memorable play was when the Wildcats were down 16-13 to the Rainier Beach Vikings. With 3:33 on the clock, senior Chris Morson recovered a fumble. Then senior T.J. Lee set up a 56-yard run to score a touchdown, beating Rainier Beach 20-16. The victory also gave the Wildcats the Metro Sound Division Title.
Girl's soccer: One of the best games was when the Wildcats beat the Eastside Catholic Crusaders 1-0. Junior Kayla Kliphardt scored on a pass from senior Tanya Tarabochia. The team has stepped up their defense to save three to four goals for senior goalie Alex Ormsby.
Volleyball: A 3-2 victory over the Ingraham Rams satisfied the Wildcats volleyball team. There’s always been a fierce rivalry between the Wildcats and the Rams. Last year, the Wildcats were unable to beat them. But during their first meeting of the year, the Wildcats won a thriller five set match.
Cross country: At the Metro championship meet, nearly everyone in the varsity team had broken their personal records. The team had advanced to the district tournament for the first time in this decade.
Golf: The girl's golf team were regional champions. Everyone worked hard and improved through out the season. As for the boys, they were off to a great start. Things seem to have gone downhill after a while, but freshmen John Aguilar went off to the Metro finals.
Winter sports
Girl's basketball: Coming off of a 25-18 deficit at the end of the third quarter, the Wildcats came back to beat Ingraham 33-30. The Wildcats outscored the Rams 15-5 in the fourth quarter. Brianne Goulet led the Wildcats with 11 points.
Boy’s basketball: On senior night, the Wildcats defeated the division leading Bainbridge Spartans 76-71. Five players on West Seattle’s team scored in double digits. At the third quarter, the Wildcats were leading 57-43. The Spartans outscored the Wildcats 28-19 in the fourth quarter but the Wildcats held on to win it.
Gymnastics: Junior Lisa Broadstone made it to state. She competed in the vault and the floor. This year, there were lots of beginners on the team and they all did pretty well.
Swimming: The team wasn’t off to a great start, but they became more competitive in the middle of the season. About half the team, boys and girls, made it to the Metros. Senior Ian Keithly and a few others made it to districts.
Wrestling: Senior Delano Jordan made it to the Metros and won the Metros. Most of the team made it to the regionals.
Spring sports
Baseball: The Wildcats knocked out the Eastside Catholic Crusaders in the playoffs for the second straight year. In their first meeting of this year, the Crusaders clobbered the Wildcats 19-7. But that was when the team was hit with injuries.
In the Metro tournament playoff match, the Wildcats beat the Crusaders by a score of 6-4.
Softball: The win that the Wildcats are most proud of is the 10-9 win against the Mount Si Wildcats. West Seattle Wildcats were down 8-1 in the third inning and they started to fight back. They scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. In the top of the ninth, the Mount Si Wildcats scored a run and put pressure on West Seattle. But in the bottom of the ninth, West Seattle scored two runs to win the game and a trip to the state tournament.
Track: The Wildcats relay team has improved overall compared to last year. Last year, the boys’ 4x100 went undefeated
for the whole season.
The girls’ 4x200 meter relay team placed second in the Metro tournament. The 4x100 meter relay team with the same runners, played third in the Metros.
Boy's soccer: The best game the boys’ soccer team played was actually a lost to Seattle Preparatory School. The Wildcats were down 2-0 and scored two goals in the last three minutes to send the game into overtimes. The game went through two overtime periods, before the Panthers scored.
Tennis: Sophomore Ali Wulf from Seattle Lutheran High School is the most valuable player on the West Seattle tennis team. Wulf finished with sixth place in the district tournament. She made it to the quarter finals in the Metro tournament, where she was ranked fifth.
Compared to last year, she lost in the first round of the Metro tournament. This year, she was undefeated against Metro Sound opponents, and only had two losses in this whole season including the playoffs.
