LECTURE
An evening with Paul Norlen, translator of Selma Lagerlöf’s
The Saga of Gosta Berling
Tuesday, Oct. 6, 7 to 9 p.m.
Join us for a discussion and book signing with Paul Norlen, translator of The Saga of Gosta Berling (1891), Selma Lagerlöf’s beloved first novel. Set in rural Värmland during the 1820s, the novel tells the story of a young defrocked pastor and the province’s richest woman, a mesmerizing Italian countess. The book was adapted to cinema in 1924, starring a young Greta Garbo. The event is free.
TRIBUTE DINNER
The Nordic Heritage Museum will celebrate a landmark in its history on Saturday, Oct. 3, with a special fundraising dinner. Honoring the thirtieth anniversary of the Museum’s founding, we will pay tribute to those who worked diligently in creating the Museum. A gourmet dinner will be prepared by world-renowned special guest chef Ludger Szmania of Magnolia’s famous Szmania’s restaurant.
CONCERT
Wood’N’Flutes in Concert
Tuesday, Oct. 20, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Can one hear the echoing hooves of Esbern Snare’s horse as it galloped across the Danish countryside 700 years ago? Does a piece written in the 21st century have the power to distract evil thoughts from a modern audience? Is the recorder truly one of the sweetest sounding instruments, as Johann Mattheson professed in the 1700s? Find out the answers to these questions and many others when the Danish-based trio Wood’N’Flutes performs at the Museum. Tickets are $15 for members of the Museum or the Northwest Danish Foundation, $17 for non-members.
