Sun, 09/13/2009
Burien's free community Wellness Fair is just what the doctor ordered for anyone seeking the latest and best in today's healthcare.
Whatever your health concern may be, and whatever your age, don't miss the opportunity to talk to health care professionals at the Wellness Fair in Burien Town Square on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Discover the plentiful quality healthcare resources available right here.
Burien's sizable and well-respected medical community will showcase what it has to offer and share its skills with the public at no charge.
The fair will focus as much on preventing health problems as on curing them, and will feature lots of interactive exhibits such as free health screenings, healthy cooking and exercise demonstrations, wellness information, samples, fire safety, block watch program, and much more. There will also be entertainment.
Among the healthcare specialties represented are dentistry and orthodontics, audiology and optometry, physical rehabilitation and therapy services, massage therapy, psychiatric counseling, prosthetics, and drug and alcohol addiction treatment.
The fair also includes nontraditional healthcare such as chiropractic, acupuncture and naturopathy.
Just for fun, kids can make their mark in the community by adding their handprint to the Hands for Highline mural at Highline Medical Center's new emergency room project. The medical center is located at 16251 Sylvester Rd. S.W. in Burien.
The Wellness Fair extends its reach to healthcare workers with information about the job opportunities available in Burien.
Those interested in working in this well-paying, ever-expanding field can also learn about local healthcare education programs.
Burien's fair is an outgrowth of the Burien Wellness Cluster, an economic initiative launched by the city of Burien in early 2008. The idea behind the cluster is to boost Burien's economy by building on Burien's existing wealth of high-quality healthcare providers.
To accomplish that goal, partnerships are created among medical providers, educators and local government to both retain the city's existing skilled medical professionals and attract and produce new talent. A significant objective of the initiative is to shift from recruiting internationally to developing young people locally to fill those jobs.
Major sponsors of the Wellness Fair are the City of Burien, Burien Group Health, Highline Medical Center, Navos Mental Health Solutions and Schick Shadel Hospital. Other sponsors include Burien Nursing and Rehabilitation.
The site of the fair is Burien Town Square, Southwest 152nd St. and Fifth Place Southwest. For more information, call 206-248-5508 or go online at www.burienwa.gov/wellness.
