Woe to the Falcons of Kentlake after the Eagles of Federal Way got a hold of them.
The Eagles sank their talons in early for a 21-0 lead and built it to a 49-14 win.
“Our kids came out ready to play tonight,” said Federal Way head coach John Meagher, whose team improved to 1-2 on the season after a couple of tough losses going into Friday’s game. “They took it to another level of offense and defense. We did a good job executing.”
Trenton Pinson of the Eagles was the best at executing, scoring three touchdowns and carrying the football 11 times for 118 yards.
“When he gets into the open, no one can catch him,” said Meagher of Pinson, who doubles as a track star in the spring. “He’s the fastest guy in the state.”
Pinson started off the scoring by running for a 55-yard touchdown with 10:18 to play in the first quarter. He took off down the middle, then got through a pack of defenders and sprinted down the right sideline.
“When you get to the secondary, it’s off to the races,” Pinson said.
Pinson found the victory sweet.
“Our goal today was to dominate them and obliterate them,” he said.
Senior kicker Kelyn Rowe then started off a big day for himself, kicking the first of his seven extra points in seven tries.
Kentlake was then forced to punt after three tries at 10 yards, and the Eagles took after at the 50. Nine plays later, it was Pinson punching the ball into the end zone on a play from the 1-yard line.
Four plays later the Falcons were forced to punt again – and four plays later it was the Eagles in the end zone once again.
Pinson wound his way up the middle and scored from the 12 at 2:26 to play in the first quarter.
But the Falcons were not dead yet.
Ryan Archibald threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Wright on a pattern across the middle, then Wright kicked the extra point to cut the Eagles’ lead to 21-7 with 1:13 to go in the quarter.
Federal Way opened the second quarter with a big play, however.
Jajuan Davis scored on a 67-yard pass catch and run down the right sideline from Nick Tanielo. That padded the lead back to 28-7 with only 11 seconds off the second quarter clock.
Both teams fell silent until the Eagles scored with 4:07 to go in the third quarter. Daytrez Sterling picked up a fumble and ran it in from 14 yards out. Rowe’s kick made it 35-7.
Kentlake scored its final touchdown at 11:25 to go in the fourth quarter, with Latrelle Dukes striking on a 15-yard run. Wright kicked another PAT and it cut FW’s lead to 35-14.
But it was all FWHS from there.
Tanielu threw a 28-yard score to Alden Coleman slanting across the middle to his left.
Jesse Hilsman ran in from the 12 for the final touchdown with 2:54 left in the game.
The Eagles return to action at 7 p.m. Friday, hosting Tahoma of Maple Valley.
