Federal Way unwrapped a new weapon in senior Isiah Umipig, and it has already paid off in dividends.
He put the Eagles on the scoreboard with 4:50 left in the first half when he caught a pass from Nick Tanielu and carried it 50 yards for a touchdown -- sending the team on its way to a 24-14 South Puget Sound League North Division win over Tahoma of Maple Valley.
Umipig is better known as a college-bound basketball player.
"It was his first varsity game ever," said Federal Way head coach John Meagher of Umipig, who joined the team two weeks into the season and had enough practices in to play varsity Friday. "There's nothing like Friday night under the lights. He knows how to compete. He can do the job defensively, too."
The Eagles stood out on defense as a unit in this game, blanking the Bears from the second quarter on.
"We came out and pitched a shutout the second half," said Meagher.
Federal Way evened its SPSL North record at 2-2 with the win and improved to 3-2 overall, while Tahoma fell to 3-2, 3-2.
"It was a big win," Meagher said.
It started off like it may be a yawner for the Eagles as Tahoma got the early jump.
The Bears marched 80 yards on 11 plays for a touchdown with 7:07 to go in the first quarter, when Niko Madison slashed through the middle on his way to a 34-yard score.
David Stoecker kicked the extra point for the 7-0 lead.
Federal Way answered on its first possession -- when Umipig finished the job with a 50-yard play to cap off a 78-yard, eight-play drive.
The Eagles took the lead with 2:00 left in the first half. Soccer standout Kelyn Rowe kicked a 25-yard field goal for three points and a 10-7 advantage.
The Bears snuck ahead again with 9:24 to go in the second quarter, when Madison "hit the hole" on the right side and scored on a 4-yard play.
Stoecker added the PAT and gave his team a 14-10 lead.
Federal Way came back with a massive 69-yard, 17-play drive that ended with Alden Coleman running it in from the 1-yard line. Rowe's PAT gave the Eagles a 17-14 advantage going into the half.
Following the Eagles' halftime homecoming activities, they went out and scored the final points of the game with 4:19 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Tanielu threw to Coleman for a 22-yard touchdown and Rowe kicked the extra point to bring the score to its final 24-14 margin.
