Depth of excellence elevated the Decatur girls golf team to its second consecutive South Puget Sound League championship in a 101- 86 points win against crosstown Thomas Jefferson at the Riverbend golf course on Tuesday.
Decatur continued unbeaten at 9-0 while Jefferson's record turned into 7-2 with the only losses to the Gators. Each team had one more match remaining.
With the teams tied at 74 points, the final two pairings decided the outcome. Junior Gators Salina Shugarts and Chanel Carlson collectively scored 27 points for the Decatur decider.
"I was really concerned," said Decatur head coach Rick Dennison. "It didn't look like we were doing that well. I wasn't sure what was happening with the last group. Instead, we reached 100 for the first time this season. We've been scoring in the 80's and 90's. It was a good team effort."
In a well played match up, the Raiders made inroads since an early season 86-64 loss to the Gators at Twin lakes Country Club. It also marked the first time this season that Decatur did not feature the medalist winner.
Jefferson freshman Alexus Song earned medalist honors with an even par 36 over the front nine holes. Song, on the strength of birdies on the fourth and fifth holes, nestled a seven wood within five feet of the cup on the par 4 fourth before draining the birdie putt. Song then bunkered her tee shot on the par 3, 105-yard fifth hole before redeeming herself by holing out her 15-foot sand shot.
Only a missed par put on hole No. 9 prevented her form posting an under par round.
"My putting and approach shots were good because we got out of school 20 minutes earlier than usual," said Song who notched 27 points. "I had time to practice putting and hit some shots on the driving range. Except for the last hole, my putting was strong today."
Gator senior Stacey Blunt was encountering a rough round and was mired at 4-over par until she played the last three holes at 1-under. Her birdie came on the par 4, 340 yard ninth hole. Her gap wedge approach shot enabled her to have an 18-foot, slightly breaking putt for the birdie that gave her a 39 and team leading 24 points.
"This was tough for me today," she admitted. "The feeling of another championship today was great. Since I'm a senior, it was a little different feeling than I had last year."
For Jefferson, head coach Jim von Doehren felt his team played very well, but simply faced a team that played better than his team was able to match.
"I'm proud of the team," he stated. " We played almost as well as we could. we could have gotten a few more shots, but it would not have been enough. Decatur played well and we played well. They were just at a higher level. To beat them, we would have had to catch them paying below their normal level."
Sophomore Amanda Beyke carded a 40 and scored 23 points to aid the Gator effort. Other Decatur point scorers were Samantha Zeeb (18), Carlson (15), Shugarts (12) and Alyssa Castagno (9)..
Katie Seo came in at 44 and 19 points for Jefferson. Other Raider point scorers were Johanna Moore (14), Sarah Yu (14), Stephanie Reagle (11) and Hannah Oh (1).
