One bad stretch ruined the whole game for the Federal Way High School girls soccer team in South Puget Sound League North Division action Tuesday, Oct. 6.
The Eagles were battling Kentwood in a scoreless tie through the first half and most of the second half before the Conquerors exploded for three goals in a time span of a little less than five minutes.
"It was going well," said Federal Way head coach Adam Ladage. "I was real pleased with the girls, then one mistake in the back and the flood gates open up. Everything fell apart at once."
Kentwood got on the scoreboard with 16 minutes, 6 seconds to play in the second half of the action at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.
A free kick was taken by the Conquerors, and the ball went right to a wall of players in front of the goal. It went out to Reilly Retz and she kicked it into the net for the score and a 1-0 lead.
Alex White of Kentwood then scored on a similar play for a 2-0 lead with 14:41 to go.
She took a free kick from the right side that also went into a group of players in front of the net, only she headed the ball in.
Alex Drazic did the honors for the Conquerors with 11:29 left to play in the match, giving her team a 3-0 lead.
Drazic slipped past the last Federal Way defensive player and drilled the ball into the net.
The loss kept the Eagles in fifth place in the SPSL North and four teams go on to the postseason.
"We're right on the cusp," said Ladage. "We've got to start winning."
Beamer 4, Curtis 1
Todd Beamer beat the Vikings to continue a season of big wins.
Jessica Niewoehner scored two goals to lead the TItans to victory and Holland Cook and Jenna Floyd added one goal apiece.
Kentlake 2, TJ 1
Jefferson an early lead as sophomore midfielder Chelsa Jensen found the back of the net.
But it was all Kentwood on the scoreboard from there, however, including the winning goal with 1:36 left on the first half clock.
Sophomore forward Laura Rayfield drove past the Raiders' defensive players into the wide open spaces in front of the TJ goalie and sent a goal high into the net.
Both teams had their close chances from there, but time literally ran out on the Raiders as they had the ball trying to put together a goal in the final two minutes, right up until the final horn blew.
