SYNPOSIS
H. G. Wells's science fiction masterpiece The War of the Worlds,
originally published in 1897, became part of one of the greatest and most
horrifying media events of all times on Halloween 1938 when Orson Welles
Mercury Theatre on the Air broadcast over the radio an adaptation of the
book which caused millions of Americans to believe they were being invaded
by Martians. It was so realistic that it caused widespread public panic. In
so doing, the broadcast dramatically demonstrated the nascent power of mass
media in America.
