L-R: Holy Family 7th graders Bridget Simmonds, Allison Horn, Stephanie Stilwell, Minh Chau Hoang, a.k.a. Holy Family Middle School alternates classes, sending a different one every three weeks or so to visit the Center. They all converged on the Center for a Christmas party Dec. 11.
The Salvation Army Senior Center inter-generational program held a Christmas party at the Center, 9050 16th SW , Friday, Dec. 11. "Our theme is 'tolerance,'" said Michael Barrett Miller, language arts teacher at the middle school, who helped organize the party, referring to his participating students.
"We also reach out to the Children's Hospital, and the Duwamish Tribe at their Longhouse. We petitioned Congressman Jim McDermott to move to recognize the tribe."
Miller said his students were recognized by both the tribe and congressman for their involvement.
"We have over 300 seniors from all walks of life," said Salvation Army Senior Center Director Janeece Talbot. "The students help carry groceries, set up food, and serve lunch. But companionship is what both the students and seniors like most. Some of the kids' grandparents are gone, or out of town, and some of the seniors come for this specifically because they miss their grandchildren who live out of town. It's not really a big (generation) gap like some people think."
"I like to make people happy, and it means a lot to help others," said Allison Horn, a Holy Family 7th grader. "They say what they did (for a living) and talk about their grandchildren."
"We remember each other from the last time we visited," said Bridgett Simmonds of her interaction with the seniors. "It's fun to see how theyre doing, I really feel like we're starting to get a relationship going with them. They're full of great stories."
