In mid-February Kenny and Scarlett Wolfe open West Seattle Pharmacy, 5401 California Avenue SW. They are updating the former Westside Pharmacy space, and will install an espresso bar for people who await their prescriptions, and for those who simply want a dose of caffeine and nothing else.
The former Westside Pharmacy will open, possibly Feb. 15, as the new West Seattle Pharmacy. Westside's owner, Michael Ng, sold his business including client list to the new QFC by the Alaska Junction in time for its fall opening.
Owners Kenny and Scarlett Wolfe are busy rehabbing and reconfiguring the 1,400 square foot space at 5401 California Avenue SW. They say West Seattle Pharmacy will be the only independent pharmacy in West Seattle. It will certainly be the only one with an espresso bar and barista.
"We'll have an LCD TV, lounge chair, massaging chair, free Wifi, for customers while they relax and wait for their prescriptions, or just hang out at the espresso bar," said Kenny. "If they can't make it in, I will go out in the evening and deliver, and I can administer flu shot shots at customers' homes."
That's right, house calls.
Scarlett is a part time dental hygienist and soon officially becomes a pharmacy assistant to help her husband.
Kenny is somewhat of a renaissance man. He graduated University of Washington with a doctorate in pharmacology and worked at a hospital, did home health care, and said he has extensive retail experience. He was also a personal trainer, union carpenter and licensed commercial diver.
So are the Wolfe's diving into the pharmacy business at the right time?
"The concern is big chains competition, but the pharmacy industry shows four percent annual growth," said Kenny. "People have been jogging and walking more, and living longer. The younger crowd doesn't want to have children yet, and so the (expanding market of) birth control."
The pharmacy will offer a large array of supplements and may soon feature wellness and specialty consultations.
"Michael Ng has been a very beloved pharmacist in the area," said Kenny. "Those are tough shoes to fill."
