Jake the yellow lab and Jon Durante go for walks in a lot of places but Gatewood Hill works just fine most of the time.
Jake is one of those dogs, a yellow labrador retriever, that everybody loves. His owner, Jon Durante got him as a puppy 12 years ago from his uncle in Mt. Vernon. Jake will "do pretty much anything for food," said Durante, but Jake does have a preference. He absolutely loves pizza. It doesn't matter where it's from really, "Just whoever is running a special."
Jake is also a swimmer and you have to spell out the word S-W-I-M around him or he gets extremely excited. He gets so wound up that it has led him to do " some pretty naughty things" Durante explained."We were up in Salmon Le Sac, at a campground just past Roslyn. My uncle has property out there and there's a river on the land. My sister had talked about it, 'There's kids out there and they like to play in it' so I bring the dog out because he loves to swim, more than anything. When we got there it wasn't like a wading pool like my sister had said. As soon as I turned around he was in the water, barreling down the river and I had to go chasing through woods to get ahead of him and then I went in to tackle him. I could see him trying to swim back to shore but he just couldn't fight the current. I thought 'Oh my god I'm going to lose my dog' so I we tumbled down the river a bit.
We finally came out of the water...we got back to the campsite. My keys and phone are full of water and my aunt and uncle said, 'What are you doing?' Are you crazy? There's a waterfall another couple hundred yards down the river! Last year someone went in after their dog and died.'
Jake is great with kids and Durante sometimes leaves him with his mother who lives next to an elementary school. The kids always come up when Jake is there and ask "Can we play with Jake?" It's probably a good thing Durante's mother doesn't have a swimming pool.
