Lancers finish in seventh

Prime time shooting came quickly and often for Seattle Prep's Karri Luttinen, who fired home a career-high 40 points in a 75-60 Panther shocker against Kennedy Catholic for fourth place. The defending champion Lancers took home the seventh place trophy.
"We had a lot of turnovers and fouls," said Presley Nuefeld, who stepped up in the first half with 10 points on 4-for-5 from the field with a pair of three-balls. Nuefeld finished with 13 points.
Luttinen tallied 12 straight points in the first quarter as Seattle Prep (19-10) built a 14-3 lead that ballooned to 17-3 before Kennedy closed within 22-13 after one quarter.
The Panthers stayed in control for a 38-28 halftime lead after leading by 15 points at 36-21.
The Lancers (24-4) played the entire first half without star guard Yaz Fuller who retook the SAT Saturday morning in Seattle, seeking to improve upon an earlier score. Fuller arrived with 2:45 remaining until halftime, stretch and entered the game after intermission.
Fuller's three-point goal on her first shot to open the second half brought Kennedy within 38-31 barely 12 seconds into the third quarter, but Luttinen responded with a three-ball that ignited a 16-0 Panther uprising for a 54-31 dominance with three minutes left in the period.
Kennedy Catholic fought hard, but had a mountain too high to climb. The Lancers closed the gap to 64-54 with 3:10 remaining only to have Luttinen and her teammates shoot far and away from the Lancers.
"It was a matter of us coming out flat with no energy," Kennedy coach Tom Mummert observed. "You can't go out and wait for your star player to show up before you start playing. We were in too big of a hole to begin with."
Fuller was not happy with seventh place and had to be called to be in the obligatory team photo, but later talked about her strange day.
"School's first," she said. "But this is hard. They just worked harder than we did. You can't take anything for granted. I remember when I was a scrawny freshman and had to be shown how to do things. As I developed and worked my way through, I grew with confidence."
Fuller said that she's mulling over several scholarship offers, but leaning toward Temple University.
With a number of key injuries during the playoffs, Kennedy did have some adjustments to make.
Although not making excuses, Mummert simply stated the way the last part of the season unfolded.
"It was a tough season," he admitted. "There were a lot of distractions and it was the worst time of the year to have injuries."
Junior guard Jasmine Lemon (10 points per game) injured her knee against Mount Rainier at district and reinjured it on Wednesday while Allie Madison tweeked her knee in the last minutes against Mercer Island. Erin Gosseen also played with an injury.
Although the Lancers lose Fuller and Nuefeld to graduation, the rest of the team returns for another run at the title next season.
Allie Madison led the Lancers with 15 points while adding seven rebounds. Fuller and Nuefeld had 13 points apiece while Aminah Williams corralled 10 rebounds with seven points.
Luttinen had assistance from Edy Jostol (14 points) and Brittany McMillan (eight points, 16 rebounds, six asssists.
