Volunteers to sweep Burien clean on Saturday
Mon, 04/19/2010
Burien Clean Sweep will be happening on Saturday, April 24th from 8 am to 1 pm. The starting point will be the Burien Fire Station #2 at 15100 Eighth Avenue S.W. were there will be teams that will clean the streets, parks and commercial areas of Burien.
With the addition of North Highline area being annexed by the city of Burien, the teams have more ground to cover and clean this year.
Even though the start time is at 8 am, the prep time comes comes as early as 6:30 am.
"The fire station helps out with preparing the garage for setting up tables and moving out the fire vehicles so the volunteers will have a place to get ready for the event at 8 a.m.," said Debra George, Discover Burien event manager.
George noted that stores in the area will be helping out by setting up dumpsters nearby for the trucks that have collected the trash around the area after the volunteers have collected them. Also there will be recycle containers for any recyclable items which will be located in the Burien municipal parking area.
The registration for the event will be at the fire station. In the past, up to 400 volunteers from individuals, communities and company related teams have reported to the station for the event.
"We got a ton of people coming out, which is great for the community to take part in cleaning their own backyard," said Steve Gilbert, executive director of Discover Burien.
The volunteers will receive breakfast and lunch during the clean sweep work at the fire station. Volunteers will be given safety vests and gloves for the event but are encouraged to bring their own gloves, brooms and shovels.
George said that she drives around the area to see which areas in the community needs the most work.
"It will be the high traffic areas of Burien that will get worked on the most. Overpass areas, all the commercial and downtown areas.
Also the annexed area will be included. "Basically we will go from border to border of the city," said George.
George also noted that after the trash collecting is finished at noon, there will be a raffle at the fire station that has prizes, including a and even a bike.
"Of course the people that volunteered are coming out more to help out the community in keeping it clean than for the raffle prizes. But overall, this is a simply fun event to enjoy and volunteer for," said Gilbert.
Besides the Clean Sweep, there will also be something for the companies and stores to do during that day as well. Big Bulk Pickup, which will be done on the same day as the clean sweep event, will be more focused on the businesses that want to remove any material as part of their spring cleaning.
"This is also done yearly so that way we don't have to worry about seeing it out on the streets. We send out fliers about this event as well the Burien Clean Sweep since they happen on the same day," said George.
