The Highland Park Improvement Club celebrated its Second Annual “Wine For Our Times” Saturday night, April 25. Active club member and event emcee, Becca Fong, discusses a Cabernet Sauvignon with club trustee and event server, Ken Knoke. The Highland Park Improvement Club celebrated its Second Annual “Wine For Our Times” wine-tasting event Saturday night, April 24 to raise money for the Building Fund of the Highland Park Improvement Club, 1116 Southwest Holden St.
The wine brought in was made by the Northwest Wine Academy at South Seattle Community College.
Ken Knoke, a trustee of the Highland Park Improvement Club, was a server, and poured a Cabernet Sauvignon 2007.
“The wine is very soft, nice subtle hints of plum and soft tannins in the finish,” Knoke said, adding, “A beautiful bouquet, easy to drink, from the Columbia Valley.”
Alki residents Lew and Judy Townsend attended, but only Lew sampled the wines.
“We have taken dance lessons here so we decided to come tonight,” said Judy.
A bit of low-key politicking was going on as Marcee Stone and Michael Heavey also attended. They are two of the four candidates running for State Representative from the 34th Legislative District.
“I grew up right down the street, at 1110 Southwest Trenton,” said Stone. “People get together to fight for neighborhood issues at the Highland Park Improvement Club which makes this an invigorating place.”
“I have expertise in serving wine,” said Michael Heavey, who volunteered as a table captain. “I bartended all through college.”
“This is a good, fun evening,” enthused Martha Mallett, a club member. “We have comradery to no end here. That’s what happens at the Highland Park Improvement Club. I’m the ‘Raffle Queen.’ When it’s all over then I’ll have a little nip. I’ve been a member for over 50 years, and I’m still kicking. I just don’t kick as high.”
