In a brief but solemn ceremony at Forest Lawn police officers who have fallen in the line of duty were honored by fellow officers and Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn Tuesday, May 4.
This marks the second year for the ceremony which was conceived by the General Manager of Forest Lawn in West Seattle David J. Salove who said, "We started planning an event similar to this about four years ago...and finally last year we just decided to put it together and actually try it the first time. In the City of Seattle there are a couple of memorial walls but nothing that's a free standing place that offers privacy and peace and a place where family and colleagues can really come and reflect privately."
The Seattle Police Honor Guard was in attendance and seated next to Mayor McGinn were East Precinct Captain Jim Dermody and Southwest Precinct Captain Joe Kessler.
Mayor McGinn said, "We know that our citizens look to government for many things, for education, parks and recreation, for help with employment. but more than anything they look to government to make sure they are safe. We ask much of our police officers in order to insure public safety. It's an honor to be here in memory of those that have served and made the ultimate sacrifice."
Officers Jill Vansike and Keven McDaniel read the honor roll of fallen officers including the most recent, officer Timothy Brenton who was murdered October 31, 2009.
Salove noted that in the course of Seattle's history 57 officers have given their lives.
Music for the event was provided by the Elliott Bay Pipe Band.
