reFresh Southwest Festival and Delridge Day set for June 5
Tue, 05/25/2010
Delridge Day and reFresh Southwest is a free community celebration taking place June 5, from 1 to 5 pm featuring live performance, creative arts and environmentally-minded workshops, speakers, family activities, and over 100+ community organizations and resources for Southwest Seattle.
Hosted at the Delridge Community Center and Playfield at 4501 Delridge Way S.W. , the event will feature two music stages with noted community performers and will connect residents with the initiatives and programs that are working to provide better access to a healthy, active lifestyle. Workshops span from sustainable gardening practices to theater arts to Brazilian dancing; family activities include potato sack races, a magic show, a walking tour and a fresh produce tasting. In addition, Sustainable West Seattle will host dozens of organizations and local businesses in a resource fair.
Harbor Properties is sponsoring the Festival portion of the event.
FAMILY ACTIVITIES
Tents will be set up for families to enjoy the festival: a photo booth, face painting, Henna Extravaganza, bubbles, potato sack races, and a jumpy tent are just a few of the features that will be offered for free throughout the day. The Austin Foundation will also offer a fun obstacle course for kids to get active and learn more about exercise.
URBAN FARM WORKSHOPS
City chickens, bees, a worm bin, and maybe even a goat? Come check out what's possible when city and farm collide, and learn more about your ability to grow, cultivate, and be more sustainable as a Seattle resident. Sustainable West Seattle will host featured stations and speakers throughout the day.
CREATIVE ARTS WORKSHOPS
From Brazillian to break dancing, found materials craft tables and theater classes, Refresh Southwest offers a multitude of hands-on, intensive arts workshops for participants of all ages. Teaching artists come from Arts Corps, Nature Consortium and Youngstown's ALL ACCESS Classes. Creative arts workshops will run all day in the Delridge Community Center.
ReFresh Southwest was made possible in part by a Neighborhood Matching Fund award of $14,500, along with the community’s contribution of $8,000. “The Delridge community is so fortunate to have the support of the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Neighborhood Matching Fund; those resources fuel events like Refresh Southwest that can bring so much of our community together,” said Randy Engstrom of the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center.
Community members attending the event are encouraged to walk. If you form a group to walk to Refresh Southwest, and register your team, you may be eligible for a cash prize or other items. To register, call 684-7416 and provide your name, name of your group, and the best way to contact you. The group lead will be contacted with more details, including maps and other supplies you'll need for your walk.
You must be a registered group to win.
Before reFresh Southwest, there will be a “Clean and Green” neighborhood clean-up event from 9 a.m. to noon. The meeting place for volunteers is Southwest Youth and Family Services at 4555 Delridge Way SW beginning at 9 a.m.
Seattle Department of Neighborhoods’ Neighborhood Matching Fund Program (NMF) was created in 1988. All projects are initiated, planned and implemented by community members in partnership with the City. Every award is matched by neighborhoods’ or communities’ resources of volunteer labor, donated materials, donated professional services or cash. Since the program was created 22 years ago, the Neighborhood Matching Fund has awarded over $45 million with a community match of more than $64 million. Projects have involved a total of nearly 78,600 volunteers who have donated over 400,000 work hours.
