'Free Flight' is a wind sculpture by David Boyer, who has been selected to create the artwork for Westcrest Park. Installed on a roundabout in Northwest Reno, Nevada, 'Free Flight', is designed to be a celebration of the area's abundant wildlife and high winds.
The monthly Highland Park Action Committee meeting May 26, gets underway at 7pm (potluck at 6:30pm) and features a discussion with artist David Boyer to about the artwork he will create for Westcrest Park. The address is 1116 SW Holden St.
The project was put out on an RFQ (request for qualifications) , "It's a letter they send out that gets published all over the art world," said Boyer. " I, along with 226 other artists applied... then the public art action committee selected six of us for Westcrest and Maple Leaf Park (for a covered reservoir in North Seattle) as finalists." After a three week review Boyer was selected to do the work for Westcrest.
Boyer, from Nevada, builds 'kinetic sculpture' that range in size from some appropriate for your yard to larger scale artwork for public settings. "I do big, outdoor, spinning, kinetic sculptures," explained Boyer, "and it's an interesting thing. I'm working now with the community and the public art commission and the landscape architects at the park and the people at the Parks Department to collaboratively work up something that's going to fit the site and be well received. I don't have a big idea right now but it will probably be something very similar to what I've done before."
You can see Boyer's work on his website, www. boyersculpture.com
After the work is designed and approved, "probably in July or August" then the actual park doesn't start being constructed until
the spring of 2011 to be completed over the following months.
"I'm just thrilled to death to be up here in Seattle and be part of it all," Boyer said.
A "No city jail" celebration will also be on the agenda after the recent announcement that no jail will be built in Highland park for at least a decade.
