John F. Kennedy stays alive for state berth

After three days, teams got to dodge balls instead of roaring rain drops as softball teams began a tournament that was originally scheduled to begin on Friday, May 21, as teams descended upon Sprinker Recreation Center to determine six places in the state tournament to be held at the South End Recreation Area in Tacoma on Friday, May 28.
John F. Kennedy remained in the chase for a state berth in fastpitch by knocking out Lakes 10-0 in five innings in day one concluding action at the Sprinker Recreation Center on Monday, May 24.
Scoring in every inning but the fifth, the Lancers recovered from a disappointing morning loss in their opener of the West Central/Southwest Bi-District tournament. Kennedy won with steady offense, notching single tallies in the first and second innings before delivering a three-spot in the third and a pair in the fourth. Three tallies in the sixth inning completed the carnage.
Ashley Davis batted 3-for-4 with a triple while Jenny Donohue was 3-for-3. Shee Samaniego was 3-for-4 and Kelsey Trautmann hit 3-for-4 with a triple.
Jessica Lewis went the distance on a four-hitter that had three strikeouts.
Unfortunately for the Lancers, they were unable to dodge their morning opponents.
Kennedy let an excellent opportunity to win its morning game get away at the end in a 4-3 loss to Capital of West Olympia.
"You can't make mistakes against a good team," said Lancer head coach Dino Josie. "Jessica Lewis pitched a nice game and was getting ground balls. We just had that collapse on defense and offensively, we had some things going on. Getting the bases loaded with no outs in the fifth inning hurt us."
Leading 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Kennedy had some fielding miscues that combined with four Cougar hits, resulting in Capital's three game winning tallies.
Until then, the Lancers were in control.
Halle Davis of Kennedy singled home the first run of the game in the first inning and followed with more offense in the second inning. Sabrina Budner led off with a single and was sacrificed bunted to second base by Shea Samaniego. Following a JFK strikeout, Jessica Lewis flipped a run-scoring single into left field.
Leading off the third inning with a stand up triple, Ashley Davis easily scored on a Halle Davis single and the Lancers led 3-0.
Capital struck for a lone fourth inning run, but Kennedy still had control.
In the fifth inning, the Lancers had a chance to put the game out of reach. Ashley Davis led off with single through the left side and Halle Davis responded with a great bunt single. Keeping the rally moving, Natalie Budner executed an excellent bunt single of her own to load the bases with no outs.
An infield fly out preceded a strikeout before a fly ball out to center field ended the promising situation to pad the lead. Then came the Capital offense against Kennedy in the seventh.
Kennedy outhit the Cougars 12-6, but three errors cost the Lancers dearly.
Leading the Lancer attack was Ashley Davis in a 3-for-3 performance including a triple. Halle Davis batted 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and Jessica Lewis was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Lewis went the route on the mound, allowing six hits and two earned runs.
