Bike fair is part of Burien festival
Tue, 06/15/2010
Eleven local organizations and businesses and countless volunteers have come together to offer the 2010 B-Town Bike Fair to be held on June 19th (10am-3pm) at Burien's Wild Strawberry and Arts Festival.
This event has developed from the Burien Bicycle Rodeos of 2006 and 2007, but has grown in size and scope to include the whole family - all ages are encouraged to ride their bikes to the fair to participate in the fun and find out more about how bike-able Burien really is (don't forget your helmet and lock.)
Activities include bicycle safety obstacle courses for elementary and preschool kids, helmet fittings, bike safety checks, adaptive cycles for all physical abilities, donation station for useable bikes, bike samples booth, bike art and a bicycle scavenger hunt! (Parent or guardian must accompany children under 18.)
REI and Bicycle's West will be volunteering at the bicycle safety check station and the Outdoors for All Foundation will be bringing their amazing adaptive cycles that include hand-cycles, three-wheelers and tandem bikes. Children's bicycle helmets will be available for free for participants (while supplies last) and have been donated by Friends of Burien Parks, Highline Medical Center and a number of individual donors. Bikeworks will be on hand to take donations of useable bikes for their youth programs.
One of the most unique features of the fair will be the Bicycle Scavenger Hunt where cyclists can experience Burien in a new way by following clues on their bikes to eight local destinations, including some of Burien's "greenest" businesses. Participants must answer questions along the way and return their forms for a chance to win prizes. The ride is around three miles and should take no more than 45 minutes. Adults and children with adults (bike trailers welcome!) are encouraged to participate; individuals, families and groups all welcome!
This event is being organized by several local community members who are inspired to share their love of biking, sustainability and teaching children responsibility and safety in a fun, empowering way. Brooks Stanfield and Jimmy Schulz are members of Sustainable Burien and longtime bike commuters; Anne York has previously organized the 2006 and 2007 Burien Bicycle Rodeos and a Bicycle Safety Booth for the 2008 Strawberry Festival.
Event partners include Friends of Burien Parks, Burien Parks and Recreation Department, Sustainable Burien, Highline Medical Center Foundation, REI, Bicycle's West, Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation, Outdoors for All Foundation, Fathering and Family Institute, Burien Auto Association and Bikeworks. A number of local establishments are featured on the scavenger hunt ride, but we can't say who or it would give it away!
