WestSide Baby will be the lucky recipient of 200,000 diapers as part of a promotion by Kimberly-Clark, makers of Huggies diapers.
The company announced yesterday that it will donate millions of diapers to 10 diaper banks across the country. They will arrive at Westside Baby 10032 15th Ave. SW in White Center next week on Wed. June 23 at 11am. The company plans to give away millions of diapers starting this week and raise awareness about parents who struggle financially to provide them for their children.
Nancy Woodland, Executive Director of Westside Baby said, "After years of outreach to diaper manufacturers, this is like a dream come true for WestSide Baby and for the thousands of children we serve. While we reach many children, we can provide only about 5 days diaper supply up to this point. Food stamps and the WIC program, do not cover diapers and we fill a huge gap for families who otherwise must ration diapers for their children. We are so thrilled to be receiving this gift and we are very excited about the future possibilities. Along with continued support from the amazing people in our community, we hope to be able to provide even more diapers to more infants in the coming year. We couldn’t be more thankful to Huggies for this generous gift and the recognition of the need to help fill this basic need."
But this is just the beginning. Plans from Kimberly-Clark include an additional 18 million to be given away later in the fall. It's part of a promotion called "Every Little Bottom " that pledges one diaper donation for every pack sold. If the plan is succesful all 20 million diapers will be given away, with a total value of $5 million this year.
Kimberly-Clark plans to make these donations regularly from now on, and is using social media, messaging on packaging and advertising to generate more donations to diaper banks. previously donations were made on a case-by-case basis. This is its first large-scale effort.
Babies need 6 to 10 diapers per day, according to Kimberly-Clark and diapers can cost up to $75 per month. The company conducted a study that concluded among many findings that through 2 1/2 a baby needs an average of 7,000 diapers.
