SLIDESHOW:Jubilee Days started with a bang and a blast Wednesday July 14
Tue, 07/13/2010
White Center Jubilee Days 2010 officially takes place on July17 and 18., on 17th Ave. S. W., just South of Roxbury. But events surrounding the community celebration have already begun and they took off like a rocket with the Jubilee Days fireworks show held in Steve Cox Memorial Park Wednesday night. The 20 minute show was outstanding and the close proximity of the crowd made everything louder, brighter and more colorful.
True to the tradition started in 1923, the Jubilee Days festival is “the” White Center community event. Jubilee Days 2010 will continue to offer something for everyone.
Jubilee Days is an opportunity to eat, drink, smile, dance, shop, golf, parade, enjoy a car show, and explore the diversity of the up-and-coming White Center neighborhood.
The Davis Shows NW Carnival will open its gates at approximately 5pm and run through Sunday July 18th. $24 all day passes may be purchased at the gate or at various White Center businesses.
This year’s fun and funky festival included the always popular Golf Tournament held on Saturday July 10 at Foster Golf Links in Tukwilla, WA. Using the 4 man scramble format, the WCJD Golf Tourny afforded the participants an enjoyable afternoon of no pressure golf. Prizes were given out for every silly reason imaginable- everyone won something. Gift certificates for lunch afterwards allowed the golfers to hang out in the clubhouse and regale each other with their favorite golf stories.
Sunday July 11 saw the resurgence of the WCJD Garden Tour. 8 private residences opened their gardens for the public to view. McLendon’s Hardware in White Center sponsored the event and was the start/ finish for the tour. Each garden had a mystery plant that needed to be written into a passport provided by Jubilee Days. The final clue was at McLendon’s. The first ten people to return with all of the correct plant clues won a $10 gift certificate from McLendon’s. The viewing public also voted on their favorite garden. The winning garden is owned and dutifully tended by Bronna Hankoff. A plethora of gifts for the garden were given to Bronna by McLendon’s Hardware.
Besides the garden tour, another new addition to Jubilee Days is the Show & Shine car event. This will be held on Saturday July 17 at the DSHS parking lot just south of Bartell’s Drug on 15th Ave S. W., one block south of SW Roxbury. Custom cars from around the White Center area will be on display. There will be 2 bands and a DJ providing rock and car related music. Event time is noon to 5pm.
The July Jubilee parade has been moved from Saturday to Sunday at 10 am. Starting from S. W. 114th Ave and will travel north up 16th Ave S. W. and conclude at S. W. 100th Ave. Among this years entrants are the Charros mounted equestrian riders. The Charros always put on a great show and shouldn’t be missed.
The street fair begins Saturday July 17 at 10 am from 17th Ave S. W. and S. W. Roxbury, to S. W. 100th Ave. 50+ venders representing everything from Samoan cuisine to creative clothing for infants will be there for everyone to enjoy. Two stages of music and entertainment ranging from rock to children’s acts will provide something for children as well as adults.
Some of the other thing happening at the Jubilee Days street fair are the Kids Center where children can do crafts and create their own ID’s to the Beer Garden where adults can relax and listen to the music from the main stage.
