One game into the 2010 season, the Ballard High School football team has all ready matched its win total from each of the past two seasons, beating Sammamish High School 15-7 Sept. 2.
The Beavers took the lead in the first quarter of the nonconference matchup when junior quarterback Jesse Scott hit junior tight end Blake Sechler for a 36-yard touchdown. John Verduin added the extra point.
Sammamish, a team that went 3-7 last year while playing in KingCo 3A, tied things up heading into halftime with a 35-yard touchdown from Andrew Engles to Taylor Ragan.
Prior to the game, coach John Bowers said he wanted to see Ballard play well late in games and finish strong.
The Beavers did that, putting eight points on the board in the fourth quarter, courtesy of Scott's 45-yard touchdown pass to Sechler. Scott added the two-point conversion on a run.
Before the start of the season, Bowers singled out Scott and team captain Sechler as two players that have been working hard and showing improvement every day.
The Beavers finish up their two-game nonconference schedule against Franklin High School at 7:45 p.m. Sept. 10 at Memorial Stadium. Metro 3A's Franklin had a 3-6 record last season.
