The Sept. 3 Admiral Way shooting suspect has been charged with three counts of second-degree assault by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Charging documents claim Thomas J. Qualls, 59, allegedly fired an assault rifle at three police officers at his home last Friday night. Officers returned fire and Qualls was hit in the abdomen, ending the ordeal and sending him to Harborview Medical Center.
Several more details on the shooting have emerged in court documents released on Sept. 9., originally reported by the Herald here.
According to prosecutors, Qualls’ daughter placed the 911 call on Friday night after he called her to say he had an argument with his wife and if she did not return to the house, he would shoot himself. She heard a gunshot and the line went dead, prompting her to call police.
When officers arrived at the scene the house was dark except for porch lights in the backyard and “what sounded like fireworks or possibly a gunshot” was heard from the area around the Qualls’ home. Three officers took the alleyway into the backyard to investigate and, according to police, Qualls emerged from the home with an assault weapon.
Documents claim an officer commanded Qualls to drop his weapon and he yelled, “F***k you guys, I’m going to get you.” According to police, Qualls pointed his rifle at the officers and fired “possibly three times in their direction.” All three officers returned fire, and then moved into cover position to wait for backup.
Qualls was shot in the stomach during the shootout and, according to police, laid on the back porch with the rifle laying next to him. When officers approached, Qualls told officers, “I’m not down.”
Prosecutors say Quall’s had a fully loaded .45 caliber handgun and the assault rifle, a 7.62 caliber, with a full magazine on his person and a loaded .22 caliber rifle was found near the back door.
Qualls was sent to the hospital and detectives conducted a search of his home after obtaining a search warrant.
According to charging documents, several surveillance cameras covering all areas surrounding his house were found so it was assumed he was aware of the officer’s arrival before stepping outside.
Several notes were also found, leading from the kitchen to an upstairs bedroom. The notes read, “got back up! Going for blood,” “be careful, it loaded and ready to go!,” “Let play not you Susan (Qualls’ wife), Love Tom” and “lock and loaded, let go.”
Prosecutors also say a large amount of marijuana was found drying on a table.
On Sept. 7, detectives interviewed Qualls and read him his Miranda Warnings at the Harborview hospital. He stated that he did not remember the night of the shooting and when it was suggested that it appeared he wanted to commit suicide, he did not agree or disagree.
The three counts of second-degree assault are for each of the three officers Qualls allegedly shot at, and prosecutor’s have requested a $1 million bail. The officers are on paid administrative leave while the case is investigated, which is normal procedure following a shooting.
