Puyallup too tough for FW, Kentwood rocks TJ
Mon, 09/13/2010
Federal Way hoped to strike it big against a team with a rich tradition Thursday, but received no pay off.
The Eagles stuck with the Puyallup Vikings throughout most of a South Puget Sound League game played at Carl Sparks Stadium before coming away with a 46-17 defeat.
Federal Way fell to 0-2 in SPSL South Division action with the loss as the Vikings -- who have a large share of league and even state titles in their past -- improved to 2-0 in the young 2010 high school season.
The Eagles wasted little time getting the early lead with a field goal at the end of a monstrous 14-play opening drive.
Koby Craig put the Eagles in the money, slicing a 21-yard kick through the uprights.
Puyallup answered with a touchdown with 2:36 left in the first quarter.
Quarterback Erin Barber fired off a 2-yard pass to Stefon Lyons on the right side and Wes Barber tacked on the extra point to make it a 7-3 game.
Federal Way snatched the lead back with 10:18 remaining in the second quarter at the end of a 13-play drive.
Junior running back DJ May punched the ball in on a 5-yard run and Craig's kick widened the Eagles' new lead to 10-7.
Puyallup took the lead back once again with 1:41 to play before halftime and widened it at the 1:04 mark.
Matt Becker snagged a screen pass from Barber and ran it on in for a 38-yard touchdown. The kick for the extra point failed to leave the score at a narrow 13-10 margin.
The Vikings buried the Eagles a little farther with a 30-yard Erin Barber to Dom Holub touchdown pass connection that made it 19-10.
Puyallup tried to make up for the earlier missed extra point with a pass attempt for two points, but it was intercepted.
The scoring ceased until Puyallup found the end zone with 5:42 remaining in the third quarter.
Barber hit Holub between two Eagle defenders for the score, and another missed conversion left the lead at 25-10.
Barber went wild to shake off Federal Way for good right at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth.
Federal Way lost a fumble to Puyallup's Jordon Fisher only 20 yards out with 38 seconds left in the third quarter. Barber scored the touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter. Lyons caught a 20-yard pass on the left side and ran the ball into the end zone to set the Vikings up for a 32-10 lead.
The Eagles answered with an 8-yard left-side touchdown run by May in the fourth quarter that was followed by a successful PAT kick by Craig to close the gap to 32-17.
That put Federal Way back within range at 15 points, before the Vikings dashed the Eagles' hopes again with a 14-yard touchdown connection from Barber to Nick Sanderfer.
The Vikings scored an extra point for a 39-17 advantage with 6:00 to go in the game.
Puyallup's final touchdown was scored with 4:11 remaining by Barber from 9 yards out. Wes Barber's PAT kick put the final margin at a much-uglier-than-it-could-have-been 46-17.
Federal Way comes home to play Curtis in a 7 p.m. game at Federal Way Memorial Stadium Thursday. Puyallup goes to Graham-Kapowsin, which was the team that beat the Eagles in their opener.
