New charges filed in smash-and-grab burglaries
Steven Hayes Kirk is accused of numerous smash-and-grab burglaries in Burien and West Seattle. During an arraignment on Sept. 13, the King County Prosecutor's Office filed three new burglary charges. Kirk now faces a total of six counts of second-degree burglary. He plead not guilty to the three new charges. His bail was also increased from $25,000 to $150,000.
Detectives with the Seattle Police Department and King County Sheriff's Office say Kirk's method was always the same. In the early morning hours, Kirk would throw a rock through the business window to get inside. He would then steal whatever money he could find and take off with the cash register. In early August, a sheriff's deputy obtained a warrant that allowed officers to place a tracking device on Kirk's pick-up.
Detectives used the tracking device to determine that Kirk had parked within a block of a Burien pizza place and three West Seattle businesses that were burglarized over three days.
On August 11 a witness called 911 to report seeing a man run off with a cash register from a Burien motorcycle shop. Kirk returned to his truck and detectives followed him, pulled him over and arrested him.
The witness later identified Kirk as the man seen running from the motorcycle shop with the cash register.
Elementary school break-in
On 09/15/10 at 2:40 a.m., an unknown suspect attempted to break into Seahurst Elementary School, located at 14603 14 Ave. S.W. in Burien. Highline school security responded to a commercial alarm and saw a white male suspect in his 20's outside of one of the outbuildings attempting to force his way in.
Upon police arrival the suspect fled the scene. A K-9 track was unsuccessful. Officers located a backpack with an oxygen tank and acetylene tank in it, bolt cutters, screwdriver, and wrench. It appeared that the suspect had cut the lock off another outbuilding as well. Officers took the evidence left behind for further investigation.
