Rogers overwhelms Beamer, 42-6

Those that don't remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
That famous saying seems to apply to Todd Beamer High football these days.
"We're averaging five turnovers a game," said Beamer coach David Sundheim. "That has got to stop."
The Titans' early turnovers allowed John Rogers to break open a tight game and roll to a 42-6 South Puget Sound League South Division win Friday at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.
After Rogers sophomore quarterback Stefan Van Horn fired a 53-yard TD catch-and-go pass to Keylin Huddleston on the second play of the game, Beamer's defense adjusted and held the Rams at bay until the last minutes of the first half.
In the Rams' next series, defensive back Dominique Maxie tackled wide receiver Wesley Salyer for a six-yard loss on a bubble screen and defensive back Shawn Priggett broke up a go-route pass on third down to force a three-and-out.
"Beamer has athletic corners," said Rogers coach Gene Bowen, whose Rams improved to 3-1 in league.
Rogers got the ball back when the Titans offense couldn't get going and linebacker Willie Roach tackled wide-receiver Kellen Westering for another two-yard loss on a screen pass on second down.
On the next play, Priggett made a fumble recovery at the Beamer 48. At that point it looked like momentum was shifting the Titans' way.
From there Beamer (1-2 in league, 1-3 overall) put together a 10-play, 37-yard drive to the Rogers' 15. Beamer senior quarterback TJ Esekielu's nine-yard shovel pass to tight end Nicky Fualaau and Maxie's 10-yard run for first downs kept the drive alive, only to see it fizzle on a failed field-goal try.
With the ball back, Rogers went to the air almost exclusively, but defensive backs Nick Bod and Marcus Saddler and Roach all broke up pass plays to help stop a 10-play drive and give the ball back to Beamer midway through the second quarter.
"Honestly, we did everything we wanted to do," Sundheim said. "We wanted them to throw the ball up. We felt like we had the athletes to keep them from getting catch-and-goes. That's all they did. That's all they really could do on us. We stopped the run."
The Titans then gave up the ball twice on fumbles, leading to two quick Rogers' touchdowns, and, essentially, the game's final verdict.
Rogers' southpaw quarterback Graham Madland, who didn't start because of sore shoulder, rifled a 20-yard pass to Westering for a touchdown and ran for another on a four-yard naked bootleg to make it 21-0 at the half.
Westering is the son of Pacific Lutheran University coach Scott Westering and the grandson of Frosty Westering, who coached the Lutes to four national titles.
Similarly, like Beamer, turnovers were a bugaboo for Rogers early in the season. They committed four in their opener against No. 2-ranked Curtis on the way to a 34-13 loss. They have corrected that, reeling off three wins, including a 49-36 win over Bethel last week.
"Turnovers are huge," Bowen said. "Curtis got us that way."
Bowen said the Rams "have rededicated themselves to taking care of the ball."
"We talk about valuing the football. Turnovers are game-changers."
Rogers kept the heat on, scoring on a 16-yard pass from Madland to Brandon Wells and running back Terrance Stubblefield's three-yard run in the third quarter.
Beamer finally scored with 10:34 left in the fourth, making it 35-6 after a failed PAT.
Esekielu threw an 18-yard pass with touch to Maxie in the far corner of the right end zone for the Titans' only score. Maxie made an acrobatic catch, reaching for the ball with his right hand and bringing it back to his body while keeping his feet inbounds.
Maxie's catch is featured on KOMO-TV's "Football Friday Top 3 Plays" this week. The play is entitled "Take It To The Max" in the vote.
"Dominque is a special player," Sundheim said. "We try to get him the ball and keep guys off TJ."
Maxie's 36-yard kickoff return, after running back Ernesto Rendon's 29-yard TD run for a 42-6 score, helped set up another scoring chance for Beamer in the fourth quarter.
The elusive Esekielu made two fine runs to keep that drive alive. On a first-down play from his own 47, Esekielu rolled left and ran all the back to the Titan 25 eluding tacklers, then reversed field, came all the way back to the right hash and picked up 11 yards for a first down. On the other play, Esekielu rolled right, reversed field and went 30 yards deep into Rogers territory.
A subsequent interception killed the drive.
Rogers had 242 yards passing. Madland completed 7 of 13 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for one. Van Horn completed 8 of 17 for 120 yards and one touchdown. Westering had seven catches for 116 yards and one touchdown. Stubblefield rushed for 61 yards and one touchdown.
For Beamer, Esekielu hit 16 of 28 passes for 164 yards and one touchdown and one interception. He rushed for 66 yards.
Federal Way 36, Emerald Ridge 17 -- Eagle quarterback Nick Tanileu had two touchdowns rushing and 165 yards passing to lead the Eagles (1-3, 1-3) over Emerald Ridge (0-4, 0-4) for their first win of the season. Running back D.J. May carried the ball 183 yards on 23 carries and one touchdown.
Decatur 19, Lincoln 16 -- The Gators (0-0, 1-3) also recorded their first win of the season, Curtis Havili's 12-yard, fourth-quarter TD run sealed the victory over Lincoln (2-2).
Kentlake 56, Jefferson 22 -- Kentlake (4-0, 4-0) erupted for five touchdowns in the first half to put away the Raiders (1-3, 1-3).
