The King County prosecutor has charged Jayson Boehm, formerly employed by the Highline School District as substitute stadium manager at Memorial Field, with four counts of unlicensed practice of medicine and one count of forgery. Boehm is accused of improperly providing sports physicals and medical treatment to student athletes and with signing a doctor's name to a form documenting a sports physical.
Boehm's employment was immediately terminated and barred from school properties when the district learned of Boehm's activity last May.
"We are pleased that charges have been filed, and we are working with the prosecutor and sheriff's department to ensure that Jayson Boehm is held accountable for his actions," said Superintendent John Welch. "The safety of our students is of the highest importance, and I have taken actions to prevent this from happening again."
Highline made personnel changes, including the hiring of a full-time athletic director, Terri McMahan, who comes with a track record of managing athletic programs; she is charged with improving training and oversight of athletic coaches and staff. Highline also requested a full audit by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA); the district has just received that audit report and has committed to implementing changes based on the findings.
Boehm also served as a volunteer for athletic teams at Evergreen High School and was contracted to provide first aid at athletic events, which he was licensed to provide as an emergency medical technician (EMT). The state later revoked his EMT and other health care licenses.
