High-flying Eagles pull away from Beamer

Federal Way landed four players in double digits scoring after breaking away from Todd Beamer in the third quarter of an eventual 78-43 victory.
The No. 1-ranked Eagles soared out to a 7-0 South Puget Sound League South Division record and improved their overall mark to 9-1 -- with the only loss coming to defending Idaho state champion Coeur D' Alene at a Christmas tournament in Spokane. Todd Beamer fell to 3-4 in SPSL South Division play with Friday's loss in the Federal Way gymnasium and to 6-4 overall.
The Titans only trailed, 34-28, at halftime before Federal Way scored the first nine points of the third quarter and 19 of the first 21.
"The first half we stayed with them," said Todd Beamer head coach Heather Sugg. "Then we just mentally broke down and we can't do that. It happens, but it's got to stop happening."
Federal Way head coach Danny Graham saw his team get flustered in the first half.
"Todd Beamer is a very good team," Graham said. "They're well coached and play hard. We came out real flat and they didn't. We limited rebounds in the second half and that allowed us to score some extra points."
Federal Way finished strong in the scoring department, led by the 20 points of 6-foot, 1-inch senior wing/post Talia Walton.
Darah Huertas-Vining added 18 as TyShana Burgess knocked in 16 and Raven Benton scored 14. Dyesha Belhumeur and Tanji Ajeto hit four apiece and Alex Huertas-Vining rounded off the Eagle scoring with two.
Shyla Akins, a 5-4 senior guard, led TJ with 18 points, but the scoring dropped off from there.
Meghan Graf was next with eight points as Megan Huff swished in six and Frantasia Johnson five. Makayla Sullivan, Katya Bixenman and Jemesa Dubois all hit two.
Federal Way made its first big move right out of the gate in the first quarter.
The Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 lead and, after Beamer broke the string with 4:30 to go in the period,
Benton iced a three-point basket to make it 11-2. After Akins hit two free throws for Beamer to make it 11-4 with 4:07 left, Federal Way strung six straight points together to build a 15-4 advantage by the 3:08 mark.
But the Titans suddenly exploded for 11 unanswered points to close out the first quarter with only a 17-15 deficit.
Akins scored a three-point shot to start the surge, then Johnson scored two and Akins made four of five free-throw attempts. Graf struck for two points with 20.5 seconds left to put the quarter margin at 17-15.
The second quarter went back-and-forth, with Beamer tying it at 21-21 on two more free throws by Akins with 5:01 to play in the quarter.
The Eagles gradually built the 34-28 lead they held at halftime -- with Benton hitting a free throw to cap off the quarter with 3.9 seconds left.
Federal Way then went on its rampages at the start of the third quarter, flying out to a 60-32 lead by the end of the period.
A steal and a layup by Akins capped the scoring with 13 seconds to go, putting the score at its 78-43 final margin.
"If we'd have played the way we played the first half in the second half, it would have been a totally different game," said Sugg.
Sugg was set to reach the one-year anniversary of the discovery of a brain tumor in her head with a game at Puyallup Tuesday.
"We're going to try to celebrate it and make it fun," said Sugg.
