Missed opportunities abounded in John F. Kennedy Catholic's Class 3A boys basketball 63-51 West Central / Southwest Bi-District tournament opening loss to Southwest No. 2 Camas last Wednesday at Clover Park High School.
"We had some plays that we just didn't get good shots on," said Lancer coach Don Hoffman. "We had a lot of good looks, but we've got to put the ball down. The effort was good. We just need to execute better when a team makes a run on us."
Trailing 51-39 after three quarters, JFK executed gaggressive defensive dynamite to stop Camas cold.
Two consecutive baskets by Cole Madison preceded a Jordan Perkins rebound basket. Six-foot, four-inch Chris Grandberry drove it to the hoop and Kennedy Catholic was suddenly within 51-47 midway through the fourth quarter.
At this point, the Papermakers dissected the overplays and double teams for eight consecutive points on the way to wrapping up the Lancers.
First half action featured nip and tuck action with neither team able to pull away by more than five points. Camas emerged with a 28-26 lead.
Opening the third quarter, the persistent Papermakers dominated the offensive boards on the way to nine consecutive points and a 37-26 clearance.
Mitch Penner's three-pointer made the score 37-29 before Camas countered to build leads of up to 13 points until the furious fourth quarter.
Penner led Kennedy Catholic with 13 points, five assists and three steals. Grandberry and Perkins had nine points each while Grandberry also had four asssists.
Kyle Friend (15) and Jacob Kaler (11) were in double figures for Camas.
Kennedy Catholic (13-8) moved on to a loser-out game Saturday at Mount Tahoma High School.
