Suspect in '83 SeaTac slaying pleads not guilty
A Florida man, who was arrested in December in connection with a fatal stabbing at a motel near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in 1983, pleaded not guilty to a second-degree murder charge in King County Superior Court on Monday. John Wayne Folds is accused of killing Frank Kouny, a 36-year-old San Francisco man who was visiting Seattle on business. Authorities said Folds was recently linked to the slaying through DNA. Folds was 19 when authorities say he went to a Motel 6 with Kouny, an interior designer he had just met on a flight from San Francisco to Seattle. People on the overnight flight said they saw Kouny socializing with several men on the plane before heading to a car-rental counter with a young man, according to charging documents. Kouny was alone when he checked into the Motel 6, 18900 47th Ave. South, at 3:45 a.m. Feb. 15, 1983. Six hours later a housekeeper found him slain on the floor of his room, according to the King County Sheriff's Office. The investigation went cold until Nov. 10, when detectives received a call from the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab saying it had matched Folds' DNA to that found on Kouny and on cigarette butts in the motel room. Folds' DNA was listed in a national criminal database because of a 2002 burglary conviction in Florida. Folds was recently extradited to Seattle and booked into the King County Jail, prosecutors said. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
Grenade found in renter's yard
The renter of a home in the 14000 block of 7th Pl. S found what appeared to be a grenade in his yard. While he was doing some landscaping when he saw a grenade among the debris that had fallen from an apple tree. The renter called a friend that has military background to investigate the grenade. The friend felt it was possibly real and called 9-1-1 immediately. The deputy who arrived could not tell if it was explosive or not from viewing it so he cleared the area and called the bomb unit for assistance. A detective from the bomb unit used x-ray to determine the grenade's firing mechanism was not functional. Then he collected the grenade for disposal.
