Roxhill Elementary School in the White Center neighborhood of West Seattle is facing its most significant challenge in recent history. Since 2010, it has lost $90,000 in Title I funds, $90,000 in federal stimulus funds, and another $10,000 in local funds, leaving a budget gap of around $190,000. This comes at a time when 60 new students will grow the school. Roxhill staff members hope to reduce this budget gap in a fundraising event on May 12, 2011 at Twist Restaurant in Belltown, downtown Seattle.
Roxhill serves a diverse community and strives to meet all of their needs. Over 60% of the student body receives additional support, with 35% receiving support as English Language Learners and another 30% receiving special education support. Over 80% of families live below the poverty line and qualify for free and reduced lunch. Despite these demographics, Roxhill staff members work hard to provide all students with an education that teaches all students rich core content and 21st century skills.
