The outdoor Spring Fling and Pinewood Derby at Big Al Brewery, 9832 14th Ave. SW, today, Saturday, helped kick off the 83rd Annual (& 88th year) of the White Center Jubilee Days' Street Fair & Parade.
The crowd braved the chill in the air to hear bands Rats in the Grass, a rock/bluegrass band, and Rat City Brass, which credits Herb Alpert for its sound.
"I've been involved with White Center Jubilee Days for about 25 years, and was president of the committee for two years," said Jerry Robison, a Burien councilmember with a law practice there. "Now I'm an advisor. When I got appointed to the Burien City Council I withdrew from the official positions from Jubilee Days. I still help out with stuff and I've arranged the fireworks.
"This year will be better than ever," he promised. "I'm looking forward to the golf tournament, garden tour, fireworks show, street fair, bowling, skating party. It's going to be a fun season. They've set up a lot of events. They've set it up every year without a guaranteed source of funding from year to year, and on the backs from a huge amount of volunteer labor, like Michael, Julie, Heather, Donnie, and many others."
Robison is referring to Michael McGrath, the current president, Julie Hiatt, the vice president, and Heather Huling and Donnie McDermott who work on committees.
"There is still an opportunity for vendors to sign up, and sponsorship opportunities, too," said Hiatt, whose parents grew up in White Center. She and McDermott are engaged, and said they met at a mutual friend's party while Hiatt was "shucking yucca", an alcoholic beverage usually made with lemons, limes, and tequila.
At this party, however, it was all about the beer, thanks to Big Al Brewing.
According to the Jubilee Days website, the Golf Tournament is listed for June at Glen Acres Golf Course with details coming.
