Shayne McPherson and the University of Washington volleyball team slammed their way into the NCAA tournament on a winning note Friday.
McPherson, a Kennedy Catholic High School graduate and West Seattle resident, had three digs in a 25-19, 25-13, 25-14 win over Washington State University that helped the Huskies finish second in the Pac-12 standings with a 14-6 record.
Washington now carries a 24-7 overall record into a 7:30 p.m. home game against Long Island University of Brooklyn to open NCAA action this Friday.
McPherson’s efforts gave her a total of 289 digs on the year so far, after she amassed 394 total digs last year as a freshman.
McPherson is a 5-foot, 6-inch defensive specialist and libero for the Huskies, after playing as an outside hitter in high school.
McPherson helped Kennedy Catholic to a Class 3A state championship as a senior and earned Most Valuable Player honors in the now defunct Seamount League as a sophomore, junior and senior.
The former Lancers homecoming queen also plays beach volleyball for the Huskies in the spring, with Washington playing its home matches in West Seattle at Alki Point.
