KENT - Chillingly cold shooting in the second half doomed Class 1A Seattle Christian in a 49-30 loss to Class 4A Sumner in a boys basketball game of the Showare Shootout presented by U.S. Army on Thurs., Dec. 21, at the Showare Center.
Pointing to the stat sheet that showed the Warriors converting 4-of-24 from the field in the second half, SC head coach Micheal Watts said, "This pretty well tells the story. We made no shots outside of the paint and ten (total shots) for the entire game. There was no offensive rebounding. We've got to box out better."
For the game, the Warriors shot 10-of-31 while being out boarded 22-11 on the offensive board and 48-31 overall.
Seattle Christian had scrapped its way into a 16-13 halftime lead before any type of shot making became problematical.
Adding the toughness of gaining offensive caroms by SC, the Spartans ran vigorously into a 30-18 lead that became 33-19 before the fourth quarter began.
Sumner never led by less than 12 the rest of the way with the Spartans rolling off the final 10 points of the game.
Before the second half of scoring stillness, the Warriors broke out of a 5-5 tie to lead 9-5 at the end of one quarter.
Jared Cattell and Spencer Howell worked well to keep Seattl Christian ahead until Sumner closed within 13-12 in the second quarter.
Cattell, Connor Knack and Zac VanderLey repulsed the threat by Sumner and the Warriors went to the break with a 16-13 lead that eventually went into the freezer.
"The good part is that we're doing this, now," concluded Watts. "These (non league) games are getting us to not be nervous later. I think we can win league and have a chance to go to state."
Cattell was the only Seattle Christian player in double figures scoring at 12. Howell closed out with eight points and seven rebounds. VanderLey notched five points with eight caroms and Harrison Hohimer added three points plus six rebounds.
Josh Lear and Cody Tannenberg scored double digits for Sumner with 14 and 11, respectively. Tanneberg grabbed 15 rebounds.
Seattle Christian continues its gauntlet of tough non league match ups when it faces Class 4A Woodinville in a 2:30 p.m. game of the Sterling Classic at Kennedy Catholic High School on Dec. 26.
