A baby Harbor Seal estimated to be four to six months old has been resting off and on, under the watchful eye of Seal Sitters the past couple of weeks. Dubbed Uno, the baby is a female as revealed by belly photos that have been taken.
Robin LIndsey who the Executive Director of Seal Sitters explained why the baby's location is bettter kept unclear, "We are trying not to broadcast to a real wide audience exactly WHERE Uno is hauling out and WHAT TIME of day, etc. We don’t want to attract people who come down to try to find her when we’re not there or who might unwittingly scare her from coming ashore just by their presence - she is an alert and skittish 4-6 month old harbor seal.
Lindsey added that if you happen to see yellow tape, cones and signs, along a shoreline that typically means there is a young harbor seal trying to rest onshore.
She explained that "stress-free, undisrupted rest is critical to seals' survival. While Uno is seemingly healthy, virtually every “weaner” seal pup is battling some respiratory issues over the winter months. Seals are weaned at around 4 weeks old and have a 50% mortality rate their first year. We have a lot of seals present in the West Seattle area right now so there must be a pretty good source of food out there this winter."
If you see a harbor seal on shore, you need to stay back, leash dogs (not allowed on the beaches) and please call Seal Sitters’ hotline at 206-905-SEAL (7325).
