Wed, 03/14/2018
An estimated 1000 plus Sealth High School and Denny Middle School students took part in a national event called ENOUGH: National School Walkout ,on March 14 remaining silent for one minute for the students who died in the shootings in Parkland Florida one month ago. They called on elected officials to pass a ban on assault weapons, prohibit the sale of high-capacity magazines and close background check loopholes. Officers from the BSU, GSA, MeChLa and Key Club united to organize the walkout.
The students gathered on the field at SWAC across the street from the school and were each given print out of the names and photos of the students who died.
Led by several student Kaneron Port, Junior said, "We as students have the right to feel unified and safe at school. We believe it should be more difficult to get a gun across America. We will no longer deal with hearing about the change that this generation needs. We are the change. We will not let this happen again. We are taking a stand and we're taking matters into our own hands. Advocating for stricter gun control laws and more mental health resources for treating troubled peers. We will not fall silent until we get what is needed. Unity is strength. Division is weakness."
The students read a proclamation from Washington State Governor Jay Inslee declaring the day "Stand up for Safer Schools Day"
District 1 Seattle City Councilmember Lisa Herbold was there in solidarity with the students.
As the event drew to a close the call went out, "Never again."
A nationwide march is set for March 24.
