KENT- The first day of spring turned into an entertaining day of victory for the Seattle Christian girls golf team.
In almost ideal weather and scoring conditions at the Riverbend Golf Complex on Tues, March 20, the Lady Warriors defeated the visiting Bellevue Christian Vikings 228-262 in team stroke play to open Nisqually 1A League action.
Sophomore Alexa Moormeier carded a 43 on the par 36 front nine to earn medalist honors.
For last spring's fourth-place state finisher, it took a comeback from an extremely rugged start to post the 43.
"The first few holes were tough," she said. "We had pictures before we played and I felt rushed. It wasn't my best round, but I pulled it back by shooting par on the last two holes. I had an insane number of three-putts. My long irons were solid, but I wasn't getting real close to the hole. Normally, my short game saves me. This year, I hope to win state. There's one girl from Spokane that's really tough."
Brittany Gesell shot 59 as the SC second place finisher. Emma Busz, who normally is the No. 2, shot a 60 while Torre Benson came in at 66 to round out the top four stroke play counters. Nalya Hodges finished the nine holes at 68.
With a mixture of experienced players with a large number first-timers, SC head coach Mandy Fiechtner enjoyed the season's initial outing.
"It was a great first day," she said. "Bellevue Christian is a fun team to be out there with. Besides Alexa, we are trying to qualify two others to state by the end of the season."
