Mann makes it a foursome
Mount Rainier graduate Brandon Mann was also in camp for the Texas Rangers this spring, making it a local foursome.
Mann signed on as a minor league free agent Jan. 10 to join Chief Sealth graduate Keone Kela, Thomas Jefferson graduate Tony Barnette and Highline graduate Ryan Brett -- who signed the same day.
All four had different destinations coming out of camp within the organization, however.
Kela was on the opening day roster and so far has thrown one scoreless inning as a right-handed reliever.
Fellow right-handed reliever Barnette started off on the disabled list along with Tim Lincecum, a graduate of the nearby University of Washington. Barnette suffered a lower back strain.
Mann is opening the season with the Rangers' Class AAA affiliate, the Round Rock Express of the Pacific Coast League. He is a left-handed pitcher.
Brett, who missed most of the past two seasons because of injury, opens the season with the Rangers' Class AA team -- the Birmingham Barons. He is now listed as an outfielder although he previously played second base in the Tampa Bay Rays organization.
The Express and the Barons start action later this week.
Gallagher hitting .286 at UW
Kennedy graduate Maggie Gallagher is hitting .286 for the University of Washington women's fastpitch softball team.
Gallagher has six hits in 21 at bats for the Huskies and has four RBI and four runs scored to go with two doubles, four walks and one stolen base.
Gallagher is now a sophomore listed as an outfielder after filling a utility role as a freshman last year and starring at shortstop for JFK.
McPherson, DeHoog take pair
Kennedy graduate and West Seattle resident Shayne McPherson teamed up with Carly DeHoog to win two beach volleyball matches for the University of Washington at Alki Beach this past Friday.
McPherson and DeHoog defeated a Boise State duo by a 21-7, 21-7 score and a Portland duo, 21-15, 21-17. The Huskies swept both Boise State and Portland as a team, 5-0.
McPhee scores 15 in finale
Mount Rainier graduate Brittany McPhee hit 15 points for the Stanford University women's basketball team as it lost, 86-59, to Louisville in the NCAA Sweet 16 on Friday, March 23.
The loss wrapped up McPhee's senior season.
Giomi, Ducks fall to Irish
The season ended for West Seattle graduate Lydia Giomi and the University of Oregon women's basketball team in the NCAA tournament with an 84-74 loss to eventual champion Notre Dame on Monday, March 26.
Giomi was a 6-foot, 6-inch redshirt freshman this year. She last played in the Pac-12 tournament.
