Sophomore quarterback Sam Huard threw for 10 touchdowns Friday as the Kennedy Catholic Lancers defeated Chief Sealth, 72-20, in the non-league season opener for both teams.
Huard, a returning starter, is the son of former University of Washington quarterback Damon Huard and nephew of former UW and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Brock Huard.
He threw nine of his touchdowns in the first half.
Chief Sealth jumped out front by a 7-6 score early in the action at the Southwest Athletic Complex in White Center before the Lancers took the lead for good with 6:52 remaining in the first quarter.
Huard found Justin Baker open on the left side for a 36-yard score and passed for a two-point conversion to make it 14-7.
Kennedy took a 59-13 halftime advantage at the 3:06 mark of the second quarter.
Huard hit Jabez Tinea down the middle as he ran a right to left crossing pattern and Tinea sprinted the rest of the way for a 67-yard touchdown.
The Lancers received a halfftime scare with eight seconds left when Tre Holman went to the turf, resulting in an ambulance call.
But Holman wound up leaving on his own two feet after the closing seconds of the half were run off.
The entire second half was played on a running clock because of the lopsided score.
The second half scoring was highlighted by a 57-yard touchdown run by Chief Sealth senior running back Dontae McMillan as the 4:05 mark of the fourth quarter went by.
The touchdown and the ensuing conversion kick closed the score to its final margin.
