The annual flower basket displays in the West Seattle Junction have returned to grace the business district again until late September.
Put up by City Planters the baskets were delayed a few weeks and will appear to be smaller at first. "We had issues with the weather this year," said owner Marshall Walton, "so they are not as fully grown as years past but they will be fine."
The baskets get watered daily with fertilization done roughly every other watering. They are given an anti-insect treatment to ward off aphids and their locations are chosen quite specifically. "Some are chosen to go in the shade and are made up of shade tolerant plants," said Steve Peterson. Others are more sun friendly and go in brighter locations. They can grow to be three feet or more below the rim of the planters, many of which are 16 inches across and quite deep. "The general rule is the deeper the roots the larger the planting," said Walton.
The baskets are all sponsored by local individuals and businesses and there are just under 100 on display.
Each one carries a small engraved plaque that denotes their sponsor.
